The UK rules
Since 29 April 2024, smart products sold in the UK must meet minimum security requirements under the product security regime. Makers must:
- not use universal default passwords, or easy-to-guess ones;
- tell you how to report security problems;
- say how long the product will get security updates.
Before you buy
- Check the security update period.
- Choose brands that have a good record of fixing problems.
After setup
- Set a strong, unique password and turn on two-factor authentication for the app.
- Turn on automatic updates.
- Turn off features you do not use, such as remote access.
- Put smart devices on a guest network.
Cameras
If a camera covers areas beyond your property, such as the street, data protection rules can apply.
When you get rid of it
Factory reset the device and remove it from your account.
